For anyone who wants to hear a pure soft voice, with penetrating treble notes, and an outstanding sensitivity finds in Cecilia Montemayor a committed singer to her art. She is able to shake the listener wth her communicative power and the beauty of her voice. She joins an overwhelming interpretative personality to a musicality that involves technical accuracy and fidelity to the score. Her career as a concert and opera singer with a spinto soprano voice has taken her to concerts in Mexico, United States, Spain, France, Australia, Colombia, Brasil and South Africa. She has a repertoire including opera, oratorio and art song, with a special affinity to new ideas and repertoire outside the traditional canon. An advocate of the Art Song repertoire internationally, she is currently promoting her CD for voice and piano “Jose Hernandez Gama-Art Songs” with full agenda touring different cities in Mexico, Brazil and the USA. As a musicologist, her area of study is the Mexican Art Song. Her book “The Mexican Lied – Catalog of music for voice and piano” was published by the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo Leon (2009), and is present in the libraries of important music schools in Mexico, USA and Canada, and is considered unique in its field internationally, making it a permanent research source for singers, teachers and researchers. Her new book, the anthology “The Art Song in the work of Jose Hernandez Gama” will be available by the end of 2015. She is Artistic Director of « MexicoLiederFest, International Art Song Festival », which celebrates the art song within a unique framework at national level in Mexico, with concerts, workshops, exhibitions and conferences around the genre.
A voice educator of international stature, she is President of the Mexican Association of Voice Teachers, and her teaching world revolves as director of Escuela de Canto y Piano de Monterrey. She holds a Master in Voice Pedagogy from Westminster Choir College at Rider University in Princeton, New Jersey, a BMus in Musicology from the University of South Africa, and is certified in piano and singing by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in London. She is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS ), the American Musicological Society, the Latin American Art Song Alliance, and the International Alliance for Women in Music.
